Arizona Coyotes sign forward to the most ridiculous contract in NHL history

BY MIKE ARMENTI    JULY 30, 2023  (11:44)
As if the Arizona Coyotes aren't already the laughing stock of the NHL, they have just come to terms on a contract extension with one of their restricted free agents, which carries a pretty ridiculous cap hit.

Per Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, the Coyotes and forward Jack McBain have struck a new 2-year deal and while the original report suggested that the AAV would be $1.6M, the cap hit actually came in at $1,599,999 per season - just $1 under $1.6M.

Honestly, yes, it's probably just for comic relief and it could have been the player pushing for it rather than the team, but there's just something about these contracts with these arbitrary salary figures that rub a lot of people the wrong way. In McBain's case, at least he took $1 less to make the deal happen the way he wanted it to, whereas we have seen others push for an additional $93,000 so the number 93 showed up in the cap figure, for example (looking at you, Mitch Marner).

If these players are expected to be viewed as pros, maybe they should act like pros. And if, in this case, the Coyotes were the ones pushing for $1 under $1.6M, that's really, truly a sad state of affairs.
