Bruins reportedly had a deal in place for a new top line center, but that deal has now fallen apart

The reigning Presidents Trophy winning Bruins have dealt with a significant number of roster losses this summer and are now in a difficult spot. After the retirement of the team's two top centers in Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci, the Bruins have turned to the trade market to try and find a new top line center.

Despite all of their efforts, the Bruins have come up empty-handed this summer. At last year's trade deadline, the Bruins spent a lot of their draft capital in an attempt to build a Stanley Cup caliber team. Unfortunately for the team, they fell short of their goal, losing in 7 games in the first round to the Florida Panthers after blowing a 3-1 series lead.

According to Sportsnet's Ken Wiebe, the Bruins have reached out to the Winnipeg Jets to express a significant amount of interest in Jets top line center, Mark Scheifele. Much to their dismay, however, they are unable to get a deal done due to a lack of assets and cap space. For the Bruins, this is a disappointing turn of events.

It's not all bad news for the Bruins, however, as Wiebe did go on to say that if Scheifele makes it to free agency next summer, the Bruins are likely at the top of his list. With teams having a lot more flexibility in the summer and with the Bruins not having an abundance of cap space tied up in bonus overages next summer, the move may become a more viable one at that point in time.
