In what should be an otherwise pretty dry month for hockey news, we have been gifted with a pretty significant piece of news on Thursday morning after the announcement Jeff Jackson, the agent for Connor McDavid, was hired as the Edmonton Oilers' new CEO of Hockey Operations. Why is this significant? Well, because of who has replaced him as McDavid's new agent.

McDavid has opted to remain with Wasserman Hockey and will have two representatives effective immediately; Adam Phillips will manage McDavid's endorsement deals, while his primary agent will be Judd Muldaver. If that name sounds familiar to Leaf fans, it's because it should. Muldaver is also the agent to Leafs superstar Auston Matthews.

Now, I know where everyone's minds will go with this. Many will attempt to spin the web that McDavid will sign in Toronto as soon as he becomes eligible in the summer of 2026. I'd absolutely love to see that occur, but at this point, there is no indication that it's something that will even be in the cards in 3 years. We don't know what the Leafs' financial situation will look like until after the Matthews, Nylander and Marner contracts are signed. We don't yet know what the plans are for Leafs captain John Tavares past 2025. We don't know what Matthew Knies' next contract will look like. We don't know what Joseph Woll and/or Ilya Samsonov's next contracts might look like.

McDavid did grow up a Leafs fan, but we can't be certain about what he is feeling at this point, let alone what he'll be thinking in 3 years. Having said that, I'm sure there's a part of each and every one of us that would love to see Connor and Auston in Leaf jerseys come July 1st, 2026.
