Controversial goal allowed after Matt Murray appears to make save of the year
BY RYAN SMITHERAM MARCH 24, 2023 (11:33)
He followed up a 48 save outing with an even better 33 save effort against Florida last night, including making a pair of ridiculous saves near the end of the first period. The first save, Murray was twisted around and somehow managed to make the save with his backside. The second save saw Murray reaching backwards with his glove to snag a Matthew Tkachuk shot out of the air.
It would have been in the conversation for save of the year. Unfortunately, thanks to the white mesh in Murray's glove, the replay showed the puck completely crossed the goal line, leading to Tkachuk getting credit for a goal and tying the game at 1. This one was a bit controversial, since it's tough to say conclusively that the puck crossed the line in its entirety.
Last night was the first time since January 11th that Murray had given up less than 4 goals. With Ilya Samsonov back in Toronto with his expecting wife, Murray will see action at least one more time this week as the Leafs play back-to-back on Saturday and Sunday to end their road trip. Hopefully Murray can continue to get into a rhythm and continue to look as comfortable as he has the last two starts.
