Former Leafs goaltender gives up on NHL dream; signs in Sweden

BY RYAN SMITHERAM    JULY 24, 2023  (9:19)
Drafted in the 6th round of the 2013 NHL Draft, Antoine Bibeau was a long-shot to make the NHL and has spent the majority of his professional career in the AHL beginning with the Toronto Marlies in the 2014-15 season. Bibeau made his NHL debut for the Leafs during the 2016-17 season, showing great promise, playing in 2 games, going 1-1-0 with a 1.99 GAA and .927 save percentage. Unfortunately, he had to wait until the 2019-20 season before he got another shot at his NHL dream. He once again skated in 2 games, this time for the Colorado Avalanche, getting the hook in one of the games and going 1-0-0 with an atrocious .881 save percentage.

The last couple of seasons, Bibeau continued to bounce around the AHL between the Chicago Wolves, Charlotte Checkers and Belleville Senators with a brief stop in the ECHL with the Allen Americans. Over his AHL career, Bibeau played in 225 games, going 113-75-25 with 16 shutouts, a .906 save percentage and 2.79 GAA.

Now, the former Leaf will have an opportunity to gain some stability overseas as he has signed with AIK, which is a team in the second tier of the Swedish Hockey League. The 29-year-old will look to gain some confidence in the second division in the hopes of making the jump to the top tier of the Swedish League next season.
