Leafs development camp invitee responds to questions about whether he is related to a Leafs all-time great

We haven't seen "Sundin" on the back of a Leafs jersey since 2008, before the iconic Mats Sundin played his final season with the team. Mats is a Leafs legend. He has a statue outside Scotiabank Arena on Legends Row, and his number 13 was retired by the team in 2016 and now hangs from the rafters. Now, in 2023, a Swede at the Leafs' development camp named Albin Sundin has caught attention for obvious reasons.

Fans and media alike have been curious as to whether or not the young Swede is related to Mats. If he was, it would have made for one heck of a story, but unfortunately, the young defenceman is not related to the previous Sundin in any way.

A lighthearted Albin Sundin seems to be taking it all in stride and with a good sense of humour. He did, however, give a nod to his father, who happened to play in the NHL at one point too.

The 18-year-old Sundin has no formal connections with the Leafs, since he is simply a camp invitee. He's one of seven unsigned defensemen on the list of invitees and played last season with Frolunda's junior and SHL pro teams.

With the Leafs' summer development camp wrapping up this weekend, it must have been one heck of a week for Sundin donning that jersey in Toronto.
