Since a few days after former GM Kyle Dubas was let go by the Leafs, rumours began to surface that the team could be leaning towards ex-Flames GM Brad Treliving as their number one candidate for the vacant GM gig in Toronto. While Treliving remains a strong candidate for the job, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman has revealed on his most recent 32 Thoughts podcast that another candidate has surfaced and could be right up there among the top candidates.

Friedman revealed on Monday that he doesn't know - or can't accurately report yet on who that candidate is, as he does not have sufficient evidence to report on it publicly. However, all signs point towards a new name potentially being the front-runner for the Leafs' GM job.

"As much as you could name someone a favourite just days into the process, I think that [Treliving] would be one. Now, I'm getting mixed intel on this, someone else told me that there was another person who came [to Toronto], but I haven't been able to prove who it was. I don't believe it was Peter Chiarelli, it certainly wasn't Doug Armstrong, who was winning a gold medal on Sunday. Marc Bergevin was overseas too, I heard he got interviewed by Zoom. As I mentioned, I heard they talked to Doug Wilson, but I don't think it was him. I don't think it was Mark Hunter - I undoubtedly think there's people there that the Leafs have talked to that we haven't figured out yet. There's no question about that.

I think this is one of those things where Shanahan and the Leafs have basically reached out to a lot of people. I think this is one of those [situations] that, when it's over.. names will trickle through and we'll hear, because I do think that they've made a lot of calls. I just think the question is; 'who's actually getting interviews?'.

I'm curious about the timeline here. The Maple Leafs said they want to do a thorough search and I think, on a level, they do. I'm just not convinced they think they have a lot of time here. How much runway do they really think they have?" - Friedman with the latest on the Leafs' GM search

If he's eliminating the candidates who are currently unavailable due to other responsibilities, I assume that means we can eliminate Jim Nill and George McPhee from the conversation as well, as both of their teams are entrenched in a fierce Western Conference Final battle with Dallas just having forced a Game 6, which is scheduled to take place tonight in Dallas.

The original report from Chris Johnston last week is that we could see a GM named in Toronto between Wednesday and Friday this week, so we'll see if that rings true and who the Leafs are prepared to name as the clubs next general manager.
