Leafs prospect tragically passes away at the age of 21

About a year and a half after Rodion Amirov was drafted in the first round of the 2020 draft by the Leafs, it was revealed doctors found a brain tumor. Over the past year and a half, Amirov has continuously undergone extensive treatments and remained positive in the hopes that he would recover and realize his dream and play in the NHL.

With the help of the Leafs, their doctors and medical staff as well as Amirov's KHL team, Salavat Yulayev Ufa, Amirov was able to receive the best care possible and was even able to join Salavat in a few practices. Unfortunately, Amirov's agent Dan Milstein announced today that Amirov has tragically passed away.

"It is we great sadness that we announce the passing of Rodion Amirov. Two years ago, Rodion was diagnosed with a brain tumour. From the moment he received the news, he refused to speak in the negative, determined to enjoy every day, facing it with the same positive attitude he showed during his hockey career. We will always remember his courage, his desire, his will, his smile, all of the great things about him. We'd like to thank his doctors, who took great care of him. We'd like to thank the Toronto Maple Leafs and his KHL - Salavat Yulayev Ufa team. Both did everything possible to help in any way, do whatever was necessary for Rodion and the Amirov family. And we'd like to thank hockey fans all over the world who sent notes of encouragement and best wishes over the past two years. They meant so much to the Amirov family," the statement read.

It is truly heartbreaking that such a young man, full of life and positivity, lost his life so soon. Our condolences are with his friends, family and teammates. Absolutely unfathomable. Rest in peace, Rodion. Leafs Nation loves you.
