Less than a week after the Tampa Bay Lightning eliminated the Toronto Maple Leafs from the playoffs in a thrilling round 1 series that went the distance, Lightning fans are taking their opportunity to rub some salt in the wounds, albeit in a very generous way.

Per the Toronto Star, a man by the name of Michael Mahoney from Umatilla, Florida has arranged a fundraising campaign that will benefit Toronto charities such as Easter Seals and Street Health Community Nursing Foundation. While it sounds like a rival fanbase showing their gratitude for a great series, which it was, the Lightning fans are certainly taking their opportunity to clown the Leafs a bit by donating $19.67 each. Yes, you read that correctly. 1967.

One Lightning fan even decided to donate $20.23, with a message directed at Leafs fans of "there's always next year". Nevertheless, Street Health, one of the charities that is benefitting from the fundraiser, took the time to thank the Lightning fans for their generous donations.

"I just wanted to get something going because Toronto is a city that hasn't had any kind of taste of success from their beloved Leafs, but the fans keep coming back for more. It's an incredible fan base and anyone who pays attention to hockey knows that."

-Mahoney on why he organized the fundraiser

Honestly, it's for a great cause. So what if it's a bit of a backhanded gesture? I'm sure the Leafs players and MLSE is in full support of the idea. And if they're concerned about being clowned by the Lightning fanbase, well, it's just fuel to get better and use it as motivation for redemption next season.
