Pretty much everyone was thrown for a loop when the Vegas Golden Knights traded Max Pacioretty, along with defenseman Dylan Coghlan, to the Carolina Hurricanes for nothing but future considerations. Pacioretty has 1 year left on his current deal, which carries a $7M cap hit.

Well, the move may not work out as planned, as the oft-injured Pacioretty is once again sidelined due to a torn Achilles. The 33-year-old is expected to undergo a surgical procedure to repair the damage on Wednesday in Raleigh. He is expected to be unavailable for the Canes for at least the next 6 months.

Pacioretty notched 37 points in 39 games this past season with the Golden Knights. As for the Hurricanes, they were over the cap prior to announcing Pacioretty's injury. With the former 22nd overall pick now sidelined until around the All-Star break, the Canes won't have to worry about moving some salary around until early in 2023.
