New Leafs prospect fires a shot at Sens organization for lack of professionalism

BY KENNEDY MERAW    JULY 17, 2023  (9:59)
This summer's Leafs development camp ended just over a week ago, and the team's prospects had a chance to bond and work with the club's trainers and a number of team development staff. The team hosted 42 players, 19 draft picks and 23 free agents, who were invited to participate.

Of the participants, one was 23-year-old Jonny Tychonick, a defenseman initially drafted 48th overall by the Ottawa Senators in 2018 and will be spending this upcoming season with the Leafs' AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. Tychonick has attended development camps for both the Senators and Leafs and has spoken on his experience with each franchise thus far.

Although this may seem like a shady comment to some, it's important to remember that when Tychonick attended the Senators' development camp in 2018 and 2019, Canadian businessman Eugene Melnyk was still the team's owner. Melnyk, who passed away in 2022, had an interesting and controversial time as owner of the Senators, which naturally would affect other components in the franchise. For example, in 2018, there was a lot of movement in the club's higher-up positions, and there was even a significant conflict of interest lawsuit between Melnyk and Capital Sports Entertainment against Trinity Development Group and their executive chairman John Ruddy.

With so much happening, it's not hard to assume things may have gotten a bit unprofessional.
