President Brendan Shanahan reveals exactly what caused Dubas to be let go by the Leafs

It was a rollercoaster of a Friday afternoon for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who just hours ago fired GM Kyle Dubas following weeks of negotiations. Team President Brendan Shanahan spoke with the media on Friday, giving a surprisingly honest and transparent account of what had transpired between he and Dubas, which ultimately led to Dubas' dismissal.

Shanahan revealed during his press conference that he had every intention of bringing Dubas back and that it was actually something the Dubas had said during the team's season-ending press conference on Monday which made Shanahan second-guess himself on whether or not Dubas was the right person for the job moving forward.

Nevertheless, Shanahan had presented Dubas with a contract offer, as confirmed in his presser today, and gave Dubas and his agent a couple of days to go over everything. It wasn't until Dubas had attempted to alter the agreement late this week that Shanahan pivoted and decided to part ways with the young GM.

As far as what all of this means for the rest of the organization, that's a little more unclear. Sheldon Keefe, who appeared to be on the chopping block as well, is now in limbo, as Shanahan revealed that he has calls scheduled with a number of staff members later today. Beyond that, the Leafs' President said he may elect to leave some of those decisions to AGM Brandon Pridham and whomever the team's next GM is.


In terms of when a decision will be made on who the next GM will be, Shanahan didn't have a definitive timeline on that, simply stating that he'd like a resolution there as soon as possible. He wouldn't confirm whether or not Pridham was receiving any consideration for the gig, instead stating that he'd prefer someone with more experience. So, by the sounds of things, we could see a veteran GM coming in at some point here in the not-too-distant future.
