P.K. Subban is at a crossroads in his career. He's no longer the explosive 40+ point defenseman that he once was, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he can't be an effective player for a team who is looking for an upgrade at the RHD position.

Subban is still available on the free agent market, but perhaps not for long, as Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal is of the mindset that the Edmonton Oilers could be one of the teams who are taking a good hard look at Subban. It's also worth noting that the Oilers have a pre-existing interest in Subban.

As for how Subban could fit into the picture in Edmonton given their current cap situation, moving out Tyson Barrie and replacing him with Subban might be a smart decision for GM Ken Holland due to the fact that Subban will not only be cheaper, but could actually be a significant improvement over Barrie defensively and provide the Oilers with some additional even strength offense.

The Oilers are currently $6M over the cap, but do have two players in Oscar Klefbom and Mike Smith who are likely to spend the season on LTIR, but moving Barrie's $4.5M cap hit for two more seasons and replacing him with a much cheaper and slightly more effective Subban could end up being a shrewd business move and one that could actually both improve the Oilers' roster and give them a bit of cap flexibility in the process.
