Sheldon Keefe says the Leafs have big plans for the injured Nick Robertson

Nick Robertson has not played since December 8th and has not skated since that date either. The California native was injured during a game between the Los Angeles Kings and the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, when Kings defenseman Matt Roy delivered a devastating hit on the young winger that sent him crashing hard into the end boards, injuring his right shoulder.

At first, the Leafs and Robertson agreed to attempt extensive rehab in the hopes that he would be able to return to the lineup in 6-8 weeks. Unfortunately, the rehab didn't work and Robertson underwent season-ending surgery on January 16th. Earlier this week, Robertson resumed skating, just two months after surgery - something that Sheldon Keefe was happy to see.

"It's great to see. It seemed like he's responded well to surgery when I've bumped into him and we've chatted. He's got a long road ahead of him. You start feeling good and you get back on the ice but it is still a long road to playing. He's so committed and he's dealt with these types of situations before where he's had bad injuries that he's had to find his way back from. In this case, he's going to have a long period of time and training and such. A guy that will be an important player down the road for sure."

In his 15 games with the Leafs before his injury, Robertson had 5 points and will be a factor next season as the Leafs will be looking to players on league-minimum or close to league-minimum deals to fill the holes left by players that may have priced themselves out of Toronto.


Robertson has been dubbed a bust at times, particularly of late as his brother Jason has become a star in Dallas. However, many forget the lengthy injury hurdles he has overcome in recent years just to be able to play. In the 2021-22 season, Robertson suffered a non-displaced fracture of his right fibula and in the season prior he had a knee injury. Robertson has also dealt with concussion and groin injuries since turning pro as well. A healthy 2023-24 will go a long way in silencing some of his critics.
