Maple Leafs ink KHL champion Nikita Grebyonkin to multi-year contract

The Toronto Maple Leafs have come to terms on a multi-year contract for top prospect and KHL standout Nikita Grebyonkin after much speculation.

After winning a Gagarin Cup championship with Metallurg Magnitogorsk last week, Grebyonkin made waves when he announced his plans to leave the KHL to begin his NHL journey. The decision came as a bit of a surprise, but there's no question that the 21-year-old is highly talented.

Per trusted NHL Insider Chris Johnston, Grebyonkin's new entry-level deal with the Leafs is a 3-year pact, which is set to begin this season, which will effectively burn a year off of his ELC, even if he doesn't play a single game for the Leafs in the playoffs.




Last week, Grebyonkin had his KHL contract terminated early to allow he and his agent, Dan Milstein, to begin negotiating with the Maple Leafs. It only took a couple of short days to hammer out a deal.

Grebyonkin posted a career high 19 goals and 41 points in 67 games for Metallurg Magnitogorsk this season, which was quite the feat for such a young player in the KHL.
